About Bugis
Bugis is named after the Bugis seafarers from Sulawesi who traded and settled along this stretch of the coast in the early 19th century.
Bugis Street was famous at night from the 1950s to the 1980s. Bugis MRT opened in 1989 and Bugis Junction opened in the 1990s, incorporating restored shophouse streets under a glass roof.
The area has seen a wave of new homes: Duo Residences (2017), Midtown Bay (2024), The M and Midtown Modern, alongside older conservation shophouses on Liang Seah and Tan Quee Lan streets.
