About Raffles Place
Raffles Place was laid out in the 1820s as Commercial Square, the trading centre of the new settlement. It was renamed Raffles Place in 1858, after Sir Stamford Raffles.
Through the 20th century the square's department stores and trading houses were replaced by bank headquarters and office towers, making it the core of Singapore's Central Business District.
Raffles Place MRT opened in December 1987 as one of the first stations on the network, and is now an interchange for the North South and East West lines.
